David really is the fairest player I ever met on a squash court - he would call a shot on himself before ever waiting to see if his opponent had raised any concern. For him, the benefit of the doubt was owed to the opponent, not to himself. Many years later I am still working towards the standard of fairness he set.
One of his best pieces of advice was to take up meditation which I had not done before. He raised it several times and eventually sent me a link to Headspace when he saw that I was ignoring him! On this I can report complete progress, as it is now part of my daily routine and I am truly grateful to David for his persistence!
I also once asked for his advice on preparing for a squash match. He said that what I needed to do was to follow his example of having a coffee just beforehand, and only wearing either red or black as these were the colours worn by all the successful sports teams. I've ignored both. My bladder is not up to it, and it does seem that the Welsh rugby team have been losing a lot of matches lately.
We share a passion for birds and birdwatching. We talked about it every time we met, but we never got to go out on a trip together. I wish we had. I would have liked to have known David better.
